LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Brookhaven National Laboratory
upon the occasion of its designation for special recognition for its
outstanding Office of Educational Programs
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend institutions of true purpose and high achievement whose exem-
plary programs and accomplishments clearly demonstrate the pursuit of
excellence in education, science and service to the community; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to congratu-
late Brookhaven National Laboratory upon the occasion of its designation
for special recognition for its outstanding Office of Educational
Programs; this auspicious occasion will be celebrated at the 3rd Annual
Educators of the Year Recognition Dinner, to be held on Friday, April
16, 2010, at the Fortunoff Ballroom at Dowling College's Randolph
Campus; and
WHEREAS, One of ten national laboratories overseen and primarily fund-
ed by the Office of Science of the United States Department of Energy,
Brookhaven National Laboratory is located in Long Island, New York; it
conducts research in the physical, biomedical, and environmental
sciences, as well as in energy technologies and national security; and
WHEREAS, The Brookhaven National Laboratory also builds and operates
major scientific facilities available to university, industry and
government researchers; it has a history of outstanding scientific
achievement that spans more than five decades; the Laboratory is multi-
disciplinary, conducting research in the physical, biomedical, and envi-
ronmental sciences as well as in energy technologies; to date, six Nobel
prizes have been credited to the research conducted at its facilities;
and
WHEREAS, Possessing a rich history of interaction with the educational
community, since 1947 Brookhaven National Laboratory has mentored thou-
sands of future scientists, engineers, technicians, and teachers at the
undergraduate and graduate levels through internship programs; it
continues to run programs that engage approximately 20,000 elementary
students, several hundred elementary teachers, and hundreds of high
school students every year; and
WHEREAS, The Brookhaven National Laboratory's Office of Educational
Programs manages the interaction of the Laboratory with the educational
community and is in active collaboration with many local educational
institutions; these collaborative initiatives create a synergy that
establishes a variety of opportunities for students and teachers that
would be difficult to undertake individually; its mission is to design,
develop, implement, and facilitate workforce development and education
initiatives that support the scientific mission at Brookhaven National
Laboratory and the Department of Energy; and
WHEREAS, Partnerships of Brookhaven Laboratory's Office of Educational
Programs have focused specifically on reaching out to local universi-
ties, including St. Joseph's College education students' visits to the
Lab and Pre-Service Teacher (PST) internships; Dowling College's Center
for Minority Teacher Development and Training Summer Science Institute
and Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs
(GEAR UP); the New York State Science and Technology Entry Program
(STEP) and the College STEP (CSTEP); and
WHEREAS, Since 2004, the Summer Science Institute at Brookhaven
National Laboratory has integrated college faculty and laboratory scien-
tists with minority undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at
Dowling College's Center for Minority Teacher Development and Training
who plan to pursue careers in teaching; and
WHEREAS, Brookhaven National Laboratory's Office of Educational
Programs fulfills its mission efficiently with the support of the unique
scientific tools and intellectual resources and staff at the Brookhaven
National Laboratory; which maintains its position as a world-class
institution on the frontiers of cutting-edge science; and
WHEREAS, The best kept secret in the State of New York, Brookhaven
National Laboratory's Office of Educational Programs serves as an
outstanding and invaluable local, regional, national and international
educational asset; and
WHEREAS, The Brookhaven National Laboratory's Office of Educational
Programs continues to fulfill its laudatory scientific and educational
purposes and is proudly aware of its distinguished past; it is eager to
fulfill its commitment to its unique mission, and is planning with
vision and purpose for the growth and change it will encounter in the
years to come; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when an insti-
tution of such noble aims and accomplishments is brought to our atten-
tion, it should be recognized and applauded by all the citizens of this
great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Brookhaven National Laboratory upon the occasion of its
designation for special recognition for its outstanding Office of Educa-
tional Programs; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Office of Educational Programs, Brookhaven National Labo-
ratory.
