LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Sylvia La Cerra upon the occasion of
being honored on Thursday, March 12, 2009, in conjunction with Women's
History Month in the State of New York

WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body to take note of and
publicly acknowledge individuals of remarkable integrity and character
who have inspired and brought pride to our majestic Empire State with
their strong contributions to the community and model citizenship; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
Sylvia La Cerra upon the occasion of being honored on Thursday, March
12, 2009, in conjunction with Women's History Month in the State of New
York; and
WHEREAS, Each year, the State of New York officially sets aside time
to recognize the unique contributions that women have made to this great
Empire State and its society; and
WHEREAS, Women of every race, class, and ethnic background have made
historic contributions to the growth and strength of New York State in
countless recorded and unrecorded ways; and
WHEREAS, A dedicated professional for many years, Sylvia La Cerra is a
product of the New York City Public School System; she earned her B.A.
degree from St. John's University and received a Master of Arts degree
from City College; and
WHEREAS, Beginning her career as a teacher at P.S. 57 in Harlem and
after child care leave, she was appointed to P.S. 200 in Brooklyn; she
later went on to become the Assistant Principal of P.S. 200, and then
became Principal of the School in 1999; she is currently retired; and
WHEREAS, In 1973, Sylvia La Cerra was selected by her principal as
"Teacher of the Year" and this honor was repeated in 1978 when she was
chosen to represent District 20 at the "Teacher of the Year Award" cere-
mony; in 1991 she participated in a special program as a school adminis-
trator and became a Danforth Scholar at City College; and
WHEREAS, Besides a strong commitment to high academic standards by
Sylvia La Cerra and her staff at P.S. 200 became a school rich in
presenting the arts; in addition, she is a member of the District 20
C.E.C.; and
WHEREAS, With her throughout have been her husband, Charles, their
three children, and their grandson, all of whom feel privileged to be a
part of her life and rejoice in her achievements; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Sylvia La Cerra upon the occasion of being honored on Thursday,
March 12, 2009, in conjunction with Women's History Month in the State
of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Sylvia La Cerra.
