LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring the Committee Against Anti-Asian
Violence upon the occasion of celebrating its 25th Anniversary

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organiza-
tions and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare of the
community and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor the
Committee Against Anti-Asian Violence upon the occasion of celebrating
its 25th Anniversary to be celebrated at its 25th Anniversary Gala on
Friday, May 20, 2011; and
WHEREAS, The Committee Against Anti-Asian Violence (CAAAV) was founded
in 1986, as one of the first organizations in the United States to mobi-
lize against racially motivated violence against Asian communities; and
WHEREAS, Over time, CAAAV has broadened its work to focus on a wide
range of issues affecting our communities, including in concentrated
urban poverty, displacement and gentrification, detention and deporta-
tion, worker exploitation, police violence, and criminalization of youth
and workers; and
WHEREAS, CAAAV has a membership base of over 200 individuals, and a
support base of over 3,000 people throughout New York City; and
WHEREAS, CAAAV is currently focused on its two major projects, the
Chinatown Justice Project and the Youth Leadership Project; and
WHEREAS, The Chinatown Justice Project organizes Chinatown residents
including youth, low-wage workers, and tenants, against community-wide
displacement and gentrification in order to preserve Chinatown as a
neighborhood for working class Asian immigrants; and
WHEREAS, The Youth Leadership Project was founded in 1996, in the
Southeast Asian community of the northwest Bronx to build the leadership
capacity of Cambodian and Vietnamese youth, to develop youth-led inter-
generational strategies, and to address community-wide struggles; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body that when organiza-
tions of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor the Committee Against Anti-Asian Violence upon the occasion of
celebrating its 25th Anniversary; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Committee Against Anti-Asian Violence.
