LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 20th Anniversary of Dominican
Village on May 5, 2012
WHEREAS, Senior citizens planted the seeds that made our communities
grow and prosper; their past contributions and future participation are
a vital part of, and valuable asset to, the fabric of community life;
and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend the
efforts of retirement communities which serve to enhance the quality of
life for our loved ones; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 20th Anniversary of Dominican Village, to be observed at a
20th Anniversary celebration on Saturday, May 5, 2012, at the Helen
Butler, O.P. Hall in Amityville, New York; and
WHEREAS, Dominican Village, founded and sponsored by the Sisters of
St. Dominic of Amityville, New York, is a not-for-profit, non-sectarian
rental retirement community and assisted living residence; and
WHEREAS, The mission of Dominican Village is to provide a supportive
environment in which the sacredness of life and the dignity of each
person are held in the highest regard and to offer its residents a
choice of programs and services which foster independence, promote phys-
ical, mental, emotional and spiritual health, and maximize opportunities
for socialization; and
WHEREAS, Six buildings nestled among stately trees on a thirteen acre
campus comprise Dominican Village; the names designated at construction
for each building have great significance for the Sisters and also serve
to designate levels of support; and
WHEREAS, The Helen Butler, O.P. Hall which was originally part of the
John XXIII Retreat House, was renovated in 2005; it is named for the
Dominican Sister who was the first CEO and now offers a venue for litur-
gies and social events for the residents and is a source of revenue
through outside rentals for weddings, parties, conferences and other
events; and
WHEREAS, The Amitycenter houses the reception area, administration
offices, doctor's offices, beauty salon, library, kitchens, dining rooms
and activities rooms; it is here that connections are made, friendships
blossom and social amenities flourish; and
WHEREAS, The Founders' Hall, location of the Enriched Housing Program,
is named for the Founding Mothers of the Sisters of St. Dominic of
Amityville, who arrived in Brooklyn in 1853 to minister to the German
immigrant population; and
WHEREAS, The Montrose and Province houses recall Montrose Avenue in
Brooklyn where the Founding Mothers established the first convent/school
and the ministry of the Sisters in the Province of Puerto Rico since
1910; and
WHEREAS, The Queensbrook house is named for the Boroughs of Queens and
Brooklyn where the Sisters ministered in schools and hospitals and
staffed an orphanage; and
WHEREAS, The Rockville house commemorates the Diocese of Rockville
Centre, the location of the Sisters' Motherhouse and Dominican Village;
the Sisters continue their ministry in both Dioceses today; and
WHEREAS, At present, more than 200 senior residents are served through
Dominican Village with dignity and respect and provided opportunities
for physical, mental, emotional and spiritual growth in an environment
which fosters independence, inner peace and a sense of security; and
WHEREAS, For 20 years, Dominican Village has been dedicated to helping
serve its community of senior citizens; this facility has never lessened
its concern for the dignity of every resident it serves, or compromised
its standard of excellence for resident care; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 20th Anniversary of Dominican Village on May 5, 2012;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Sisters of St. Dominic of Amityville, New York.
