LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the dedication of the War of 1812
Bicentennial International Peace Garden on June 23, 2012

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that the quality and
character of the life of the citizens of this great Empire State are
greatly enriched by the availability of parks, gardens, and recreational
facilities within our communities; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the dedication of the War of 1812 Bicentennial International Peace
Garden on Saturday, June 23, 2012, at the Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse
in Rochester, New York; and
WHEREAS, The War of 1812 Bicentennial International Peace Garden is
located on the grounds of the oldest surviving lighthouse in America on
Lake Ontario, the Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse; and
WHEREAS, The interest in establishing a peace garden started on March
19, 2012; and
WHEREAS, The project manager of the War of 1812 Bicentennial Interna-
tional Peace Garden was Fred Amato; he worked closely with Tom Clayton,
Buildings and Grounds Manager of the Lighthouse Historical Society, to
create the final garden; and
WHEREAS, The major significance of the War of 1812 Bicentennial Inter-
national Peace Garden is the fact that four battles/events took place in
and around the area of where the lighthouse is today; and
WHEREAS, The War of 1812 Bicentennial International Peace Garden was
created with four sections which represent four battles/events at the
mouth of the Genesee River and Lake Ontario which was a major port for
shipping and receiving goods; each quadrant has a panel describing a
particular battle; and
WHEREAS, The garden is rectangular and covers 333 square feet and is
planted with double knock-out roses, Shasta daisies, geraniums and ager-
atums; the color scheme is red, white and blue; there are four flag
poles which display the American Flag, the Star Spangle Flag, the Cana-
dian Flag and the British Flag; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to commemorate
those events of historical significance which add strength, vigor and
inspiration to the cultural diversity and quality of life in the commu-
nities of the State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the dedication of the War of 1812 Bicentennial International
Peace Garden on June 23, 2012; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Charlotte-Genesee Lighthouse Historical Society.
