Low attendance, stuck school buses, parking woes plague Staten Island schools after NYC blizzard

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — After an historic blizzard dumped more than two feet of snow across New York City, and even more on Staten Island, schools faced challenges of low attendance, stuck school buses on snowy streets, and parking problems.

On Monday, Borough President Vito Fossella, State Sen. Andrew Lanza, State Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton, Assemblymember Michael Reilly, Assemblymember Michael Tannousis, Assemblymember Sam Pirozzolo, and the Island’s delegation to the City Council — Councilmember Kamillah Hanks, Councilmember David Carr, and Councilmember Frank Morano — all blasted Mamdani for announcing public schools’ reopening, particularly on hard-hit Staten Island.

They criticized the city’s overall local response to the storm, claiming many borough roads were not navigable — making for a difficult return to school for both families and school staff on Tuesday.
