Staten Island veterans ceremony honors community service leaders
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — An awards ceremony sponsored by the United Staten Island Veterans Organization (USIVO) recognized community spirited Staten Islanders during a ceremony at Congregation B’nai Israel in Bay Terrace.
The event is part of the Chapel of Four Chaplains Legion of Honor Program that recognizes individuals who perform “extraordinary” service at various levels — and not just for professional achievements.
State Senator Jessica Scarcella-Spanton, nominated by James A. Haynes IV, serves as chair of the veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs Committee. She was honored for establishing a strong record of proactive constituent service for Staten Island, and for establishing bills to benefit veterans.
Paul Matrecano, nominated by James A. Haynes IV, is Scarcella-Spanton’s community liaison. He was singled out for his help in having a statue of Rev. Vincent Capodanno erected on Staten Island.
