LONG ISLAND, NY - Senator Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick recently presented the Hewlett-Woodmere and Malverne Public Libraries with wall-mounted overdose emergency kits and naloxone first aid pouches as part of her continued efforts to prioritize public safety throughout New York State Senate District 9.
In recognition of the growing need to strengthen public safety in everyday community settings, Senator Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick, with support from the New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS) and Project COPE, is providing Senate District 9 residents with Narcan kits and related overdose response materials.
In addition to Hewlett-Woodmere and Malverne, Senator Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick has secured overdose response kits for libraries in East Rockaway, Elmont, Floral Park, Franklin Square, Long Beach, Lynbrook, Oceanside, Lawrence (Peninsula), and Valley Stream.
“Libraries are more than just places to check out a book, they are vital community hubs that residents rely on every day. They welcome people from all walks of life, and it is important that they are equipped with the proper tools and resources to respond when someone in the community needs help,” said Senator Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick.
“I want to express my sincere gratitude for the Senator’s unwavering support. I think Narcan Kits are important to have in our libraries because we are a trusted community center and we welcome everyone regardless of background, including vulnerable populations like those experiencing homelessness or health challenges. Having Narcan on-site allows us to act immediately before a tragedy happens,” said Carol Lagos, Malverne Library Director.
“The HWPL is not just a library–it's a community center located at the heart of the Five Towns. With over 2,000 visitors on a daily basis, we want to ensure that everyone who walks through our doors feels welcome, and having these life-saving kits adds to the health and well-being of our community. We thank Senator Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick for including us in this special, life-saving program,” said Michelle Young, Hewlett-Woodmere Library Director.
Senator Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick will continue to prioritize public safety by partnering with state and local organizations and institutions to expand access to life-saving resources and ensure communities across Senate District 9 are prepared to respond in emergency situations.
