SENATOR CANZONERI-FITZPATRICK CALLS ON GOVERNOR HOCHUL TO SUSPEND STATE GAS TAXES

ALBANY, NY - Senator Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick joined her Senate Republican colleagues in calling on Governor Kathy Hochul to immediately suspend state taxes on motor fuel and diesel motor fuel to provide direct relief to New York drivers, families, farmers, commuters, and small businesses facing rising costs at the pump.

New Yorkers are currently paying approximately $4.60 per gallon for gasoline and nearly $6 per gallon for diesel, placing another financial burden on residents and businesses already struggling with the high cost of living.

In a letter to Governor Hochul, Senate Republicans noted that New York previously implemented a temporary fuel tax holiday in 2022 when gas prices reached record highs. At the time, the state estimated the suspension provided a reduction of at least 16 cents per gallon statewide and delivered hundreds of millions of dollars in direct relief to New Yorkers.

“New Yorkers received this relief in 2022, and taxpayers deserve that same relief again today,” Senator Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick said. “Motor fuel is not optional for people who need to drive to work, bring their children to school, get to medical appointments, or run a business. Diesel prices also drive up the cost of goods, meaning families pay more at the grocery store and in nearly every part of daily life.”
