Two Bronxville High School educators – Lisa Azria and Toby Gillen – have earned New York State Sen. Shelley Mayer’s Outstanding Educator Awards. They were recognized for their meaningful contributions to students and their school community. 

Azria, a master special education teacher who is responsible for educating students in the Life Skills class, was nominated by Director of Pupil Personnel Services Christine Dowd. She was praised for providing extensive community-based opportunities that have resulted in students being more prepared for life after graduation. The students have managed the special education garden and the distribution of mail for all three schools and helped a local restaurant prepare to receive customers for the evening by setting tables and organizing menus. 

“When thinking about Lisa’s work through the lens of the Bronxville Promise, she exemplifies leadership skills in her ability to create and oversee a loving, nurturing environment for both her students and staff,” Dowd said. “She is consistently acting and inspiring others to work towards positive outcomes. Lisa shows innovation in her ability to recognize opportunities for improvement and take risks that add value to her program. Lisa’s willingness to deepen her understanding of curriculum, behavioral strategies and skills, and evaluate possible outcomes without judgment supports the disposition of critical thinking. Lisa is continually creating opportunities for her students to be engaged citizens in our school and the greater Bronxville community. Her students gain a sense of pride in themselves as active members of the Bronxville community.”

Gillen, the high school French teacher, was nominated by Principal Dr. Ray Loverso. She was described as an indispensable asset, instructing all levels from introductory to AP. Beyond the classroom, she spearheads the French Club, organizing the biennial student trip to Quebec, and expertly coordinates the biennial French Exchange with Aubenas, France. She is also a core panel member of the school’s Seal of Biliteracy adjudication process.

“Her leadership extends to her role as New Teacher Mentor Coordinator, where she designs and oversees the program guiding new educators, ensuring a high standard of instruction for new staff,” Dr. Loverso said. “Ms. Gillen’s efforts infuse our school with French language and culture, creating the impression of a thriving French department, a remarkable feat for a solo teacher in a school of 530. Toby is an exceptional teacher and leader whose profound dedication and extraordinary talents immensely benefit our students and faculty.”
