ITHACA, NY – On July 13, 2026, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced that they will be moving forward with their plans to replace the Dryden Lake Dam. 

Said Senator Lea Webb, “I am thankful that the Department of Environmental Conservation has finalized plans to replace Dryden Lake Dam. The dam in Dryden is essential to maintaining equilibrium in the local ecosystem. Increasing loss of water in the lake will harm wildlife, water quality of the lake, and residents in the area. I will continue working with the relevant departments at both the state and local level to ensure this issue is addressed and resolved.” 

Said Jason Liefer, supervisor of the Town of Dryden, “This is great news. We are pleased that DEC put Dryden Lake dam on their replacement schedule and look forward to seeing this project completed. Dryden Lake is an asset to the Town not only for its recreation opportunities but as a habitat for wildlife.”  

“We welcome the decision by New York State to make this critical investment in Dryden’s future,” stated Dan Lamb, deputy supervisor of the Town of Dryden. “Having met with Senator Webb earlier this year, I know she understands the importance of the dam to our community. I appreciate her help in advancing this action by the state. A modern replacement dam will provide safety and enjoyment of Dryden Lake for generations to come.” 

Dryden Lake was created in the 1800s when the original dam was installed to power a sawmill, making the area a center for the lumber industry. The lake is an essential part of the community, serving as a gathering space for residents and visitors, wildlife refuge, fishery, bird habitat, and a recreation hub for the community. The town worked with New York State in 1997 to establish Dryden Lake Park, though the DEC manages the rest of the Dryden Lake Multiple Use Area including the Dryden Lake Dam. 

The DEC has stated publicly that they anticipate soliciting bids for the project in the coming months, with a likely award date before the end of 2026.
