Carlucci: The Trump Administration is Wrong to End TPS for Haitians
November 21, 2017
Ending Haiti's temporary protected status (TPS) is just plain wrong. I stood with my friends and neighbors from the Haitian community to call on President Trump and the Department of Homeland Security to reverse this decision.
Forcing the 59,000 Haitians who are living and working in the United States to return to an island still reeling from the earthquake in 2010 and Hurricane Matthew in 2016 is unfair and unnecessary.
We are a nation of immigrants. A nation made stronger by every person who has come here in search of a better life. Your decision is deeply unjust and will do irreparable harm to the vibrant Haitian community living here. I implore you to extend the TPS of Haitian refugees until their country is stabilized and able to receive them.
