Senator Bonacic Secures $200,000 in this Year's State Budget for the Village of Delhi to Offset Costs Public Safety Costs Related to SUNY Delhi
April 2, 2018
(Albany, NY)- State Senator John J. Bonacic (R/C/I-Mt. Hope) announced today that he has successfully advocated for the inclusion of $200,000 in this year’s FY 2018-2019 State Budget for the Village of Delhi to help offset public safety costs related to hosting SUNY Delhi. The Village requested the inclusion, and Senator Bonacic made it one of his top budget priorities for this year. Similar amounts were given to the cities of Cortland and Oneonta in the 2016-7 and 2017-18 State Budgets.
“I’m pleased that this year’s budget includes this funding for the Village of Delhi, who serve as a host community for SUNY Delhi,” said Senator Bonacic. “While hosting a SUNY institution adds economic vitality to a community, there is still financial stress on the host municipality, including in its policing. These needed funds will help the Village defray some of the public safety costs they incur on a daily basis.”
Village of Delhi Mayor Richard Maxey said, “The Village of Delhi has lobbied for three years as well as several other SUNY host communities for this aid. The village is 75% tax exempt and as a “host community” we have had to double and at times triple our police patrols on weekends due to off campus housing issues and our code enforcement officer vigorously inspects student housing multiple times yearly for life safety measures. The village greatly appreciates all the efforts Senator Bonacic has provided and continues to provide to the Village of Delhi.”
