STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — New York City’s new pied-à-terre tax is intended to raise hundreds of millions of dollars annually from owners of luxury second homes, but the rollout has already sparked controversy after the city published a list of property owners whose properties may be subject to the surcharge.
State Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton, a Democrat, also criticized the release, calling it “deeply unsettling” and claiming she and other residents were included inaccurately. She urged the city to remove the list, review it for errors and republish it only after the information has been verified.
