New property-tax exemption law expands eligibility to certain military personnel serving in combat zones

State Senator Jessica Scarcella-Spanton, D-23/Southern Brooklyn, who made the announcement on Tuesday, sponsored the combat zone service property tax exemption bill, S8790, which passed her house unanimously. This bill is an amended version of Chapter 677 of the Laws of New York 2025, authorizing municipalities to offer property tax exemptions to service members who served in a combat zone on active duty during the taxable year. The new amendment clarifies the definition of the armed forces to include National Guard or Naval Militia service members, but ends eligibility for service members who already receive any other property tax exemption on the same assessment roll.
