Senator Bill Larkin (R-C, Cornwall-on-Hudson) today announced he has secured state grants for several local organizations that assist seniors.

"It is particularly satisfying to be able to assist the groups that work so hard for others in our communities and neighborhoods," said Senator Larkin. "These grants will go a long way to help improve the quality of life for many seniors."

The Johnes Home in the Hamlet of Balmville has received $50,000 toward the cost of window replacement, building a handicap ramp, and roof repairs.

The Hudson Valley Senior Residence in Kingston has received $36,000 for the purchase and installation of an emergency generator to be used during periods of power outages. HVSR is a nonprofit residential facility serving up to 48 senior residents who are no longer able to live alone, but are not ready for the total care of a nursing facility.

The Alzheimer’s Association Hudson Valley Chapter has been awarded $16,000 for its Early-Stage Therapy Demonstration Project. It is estimated that more than 7,000 people are currently living with dementia in Orange and Ulster Counties. The program will assist individuals who are diagnosed in the very early stages of the disease and are still high functioning and often still working. Therapy will be geared to help patients maintain their current level of performance for a s long as possible.

The New Windsor Senior Citizens’ Club, Inc. has received $5,000 toward transportation costs for the club. The Grant-In-Aid transportation program saves each senior $10 to $15 per ticket on any trip taken.
