New York, NY – Today State Senator Liz Krueger (D-Manhattan) expressed her gratification at the imminent election of Christine Quinn as the first woman Speaker of the New York City Council. “It is a sign of how far our City has come that it is now possible for women of talent to aspire to positions that have long been exclusively held by men,” said Senator Krueger. “We all win when we open our political process to all people regardless of gender, or sexual orientation.” Senator Krueger noted that Councilmember Quinn will be both the first woman and openly lesbian Speaker of the City Council.
“I have worked with Councilmember Quinn for many years, and know that she will bring intelligence, dedication, and a passion for improving the lives of all New Yorkers to the job of Speaker,” said Senator Krueger. “I look forward to the leadership that she will provide on critical issues facing the City of New York, and am delighted that the majority of her colleagues on the Council share my views of her leadership qualities.”
