Waiver Issued, Black to Serve as Next City Schools Chancellor

Brooklyn- State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn) has issued the following statement following State Education Commissioner David Steiner’s issuance of a waiver allowing Cathie Black to serve as the next New York City public schools chancellor:

“On behalf of the students, families, teachers and administrators of New York City, I commend Commissioner David Steiner for granting Cathie Black a waiver and for recognizing her ability to lead New York’s public schools. As they say, ‘an apple for my teacher’, so today we say a “Big Apple” for Cathie Black.

Cathie Black was deserving of this waiver so to be named schools chancellor from the minute she was selected to succeed outgoing Chancellor Joel Klein. I am glad the waiver has been approved and now look forward to seeing Chancellor Black in our classrooms and schools, along with Deputy Chancellor Shael Polakow-Suransky, making a true difference for the future of New York City.

Anyone that studied Cathie Black’s resume saw a talented individual who should be embraced for wanting to accept the challenge and responsibility of educating New York City’s 1.1 million school children. I look forward to seeing test scores rise, new schools opened and more students achieving their highest potential under Chancellor Black.”
