Senator John J. Bonacic’s (R/C/I – Mt Hope) “Move Over Bill” (S.2769B) passed the New York State Assembly today. 

Senator Bonacic introduced this legislation at the request of Ellenville Town Judge, Matthew Parker of Ulster County whose son, Kyle Parker was a tow truck driver killed by a tractor trailer on the New York State Thruway when responding to an emergency call. 

The legislation would require drivers traveling on parkways, expressways, and other controlled access highways to move over one lane when approaching or passing construction vehicles, tow trucks  or other “hazard vehicles” stopped on the road with their lights flashing. The law would provide an additional level of safety for these vehicles while they are performing their work-related duties, such as highway construction and maintenance, snow-removal or removing stranded or disabled vehicles.   

“The Senate has passed this legislation for years,”  said Senator Bonacic. “I am pleased that the Assembly has joined us in passing this important highway safety measure to protect all those hardworking men and women on our New York State Roadways.” 

This measure now goes to the Governor for final approval.
