Spring Dam Burst Washed Out Walleye from Key Fishing Spot

State Senator Patty Ritchie said today that the owner of a St. Lawrence County dam that burst last spring, washing out mature walleye at the very beginning of fishing season, will restock the Oswegatchie River upstream from the village this week.

Brookfield Renewable Power will stock 1,000 walleye, a number they based on previous restocking efforts and consultations with state environmental officials.

“I want to thank Brookfield Renewable Power for fulfilling its promise to restock the Heuvelton section of the Oswegatchie River,” Senator Ritchie said. “The company obviously takes its responsibilities as a steward of the river very seriously.”

“The Oswegatchie River is one of St. Lawrence County’s outstanding resources and assets,” Senator Ritchie said. “Restocking the river will insure that it continues to attract sportsmen and visitors to our region.”

On June 8, a gate on the dam ruptured, draining millions of gallons of water from the reservoir, temporarily causing wide mud flats.

"After the dam break, I met with Brookfield and won their commitment to consult with the DEC to determine the best way to mitigate any impacts to the Heuvelton section of the river. This restocking effort is a fulfillment of that promise.”
