Senator Bonacic Statement on Thruway Toll Increase Proposal
John J. Bonacic
June 1, 2012
“Earlier this week, the New York State Thruway Authority Board voted to begin the process to implement a 45 percent increase on certain commercial tolls. Based on the economic impact this will have on New York’s businesses and families, they should reconsider their decision.
A 45 percent toll increase would dramatically raise costs on trucking companies that are transporting goods across the state. While this is characterized as a commercial toll increase, businesses will not be the only ones affected. Ultimately, consumers will pay for these cost increases in the form of higher prices on all types of goods.
The current economy is causing serious pain to families and businesses across the state. Many are barely surviving and can’t afford to keep paying higher costs.
I urge the Thruway Authority to put the brakes on this toll increase and continue to find savings internally through improved efficiencies as a way to improve its finances.”
