In recognition of his efforts to strengthen criminal justice and victim services, State Senator Mike Nozzolio was today honored by the domestic violence survivors’ group SAFER with their Criminal Justice Professional Appreciation Award.

“Just a few weeks ago, my colleagues in the Senate and I commemorated National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, a powerful reminder that  the victims of crime throughout our region and State deserve every service and support we can provide,” said Senator Nozzolio. “Throughout my service in the State Senate, I have fought to ensure that our criminal justice system is first and foremost a victims’ justice system, and I am greatly honored to receive this outstanding recognition from SAFER.”

SAFER, or Survivors Advocating for Effective Reform, is a group of domestic violence survivors and advocates who work within our community and statewide to strengthen protections against this abuse. The Criminal Justice Appreciation Award recognizes individuals in the criminal justice field who have promoted safety, understanding and support for victims of domestic violence.

As Chairman of the Senate Crime Victims, Crime and Corrections Committee, Senator Nozzolio has been an outspoken proponent of victims’ rights and has been instrumental in fighting for legislation to increase penalties for domestic abusers and other violent criminals. Currently, he is sponsoring legislation known as “Brittany’s Law” (S.3645) to create a statewide registry tracking violent felony offenders. Senator Nozzolio has also been instrumental in securing State aid to assist local victims’ service agencies and organizations

“The most effective way to prevent domestic violence is to provide counseling services and legal protections for victims,” said Senator Nozzolio. “I applaud SAFER and all of the other victims’ services organizations in our region for all they do to help the individuals and families impacted by this tragic crime.”
