August 7th is designated as Purple Heart Day in New York State, marking today as the 231st anniversary of the Purple Heart Award. 

The Purple Heart is the U.S. military’s oldest honor, and is awarded to any member of the Armed Forces who is wounded or killed in conflict with an enemy force, or while being held by an enemy force as a prisoner of war.

The Purple Heart medal was established on August 7, 1782 by General George Washington from his headquarters in Newburgh, New York. Today, the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor is located nearby in New Windsor and is dedicated to preserving and commemorating the stories of Purple Heart recipients from all branches of service.
