Senator John A. DeFrancisco announced today, May 29, 2013, that his legislation (S2311), which would double the penalties for littering, passed the New York State Senate.

“Littering not only impacts the appearance of the roadways, it also can pose driving hazards, and trash is very costly to remove,” said Senator DeFrancisco.

If enacted, the fine for littering will be raised from $350 to $700 for the first offense and from $700 to $1,400 for the second offense.

“Stiffening the fines for those who are caught throwing trash on the highways should help to serve as a deterrent, and help to clean up the roadways in our state,” concluded Senator DeFrancisco.
