Early detection is crucial for overcoming breast cancer

Senator John Bonacic would like to remind women that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and to take the steps necessary for early detection, and screening. He joins with the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program in their October Campaign to urge women to get mammograms.

“According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women, except for skin cancers, and about 1 in 8 women in the US will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime,” said Senator Bonacic. “I hope that this month, women will take the time to make an appointment for a mammogram; it is important for each and every one of us to be proactive about our health. We have all learned that early detection provides the best chance for successful treatment.”

The American Cancer Society especially urges regular screenings since breast cancers found during a screening exam is more likely to be small and still confined to the breast.
