NEW YORK, NY --Senator Brad Hoylman (D/WF-Manhattan) released the following statement in response to the New York State Parole Board’s decision to grant parole to Judith Clark. Hoylman is also the sponsor of legislation (S.2144/A.4319) which would allow for the consideration of elder parole for incarcerated people aged 55 and above who have already served 15 years in prison:

Senator Hoylman said: “Today, six months shy of her 70th birthday, Judith Clark was granted parole. Where there has been ample punishment, proof of rehabilitation, acceptance of responsibility, and genuine remorse, the doors of mercy must be opened. Judith Clark transformed her life, and those doors were opened to her today.

There are so many more Judith Clarks out there—elder, incarcerated New Yorkers who have honestly confronted their crimes, taken responsibility, served their time, and worked to change the path of their lives. Now we must work for their freedom, too. I’m proud to carry legislation that would allow for the consideration of elder parole for incarcerated people over the age of 55 and above who have already served 15 years in prison. It’s the right thing to do.”
