NEW YORK—Since September 2018, the New York City Department of Sanitation has parked garbage trucks on 10th Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues overnight and all day on Sundays. After Senator Brad Hoylman (D/WF-Manhattan) and Assembly Member Deborah Glick (D-Manhattan) introduced legislation to ban overnight garbage truck parking for residential streets citywide, the Department of Sanitation will announce their plans to end this practice.

In response, Senator Hoylman issued the following statement:

“The sweet smell of success! Thanks to the work of neighbors, the community board, and elected officials including Mayor de Blasio, the Sanitation Department has finally moved their garbage trucks off this residential block in the East Village to a more suitable location. Hopefully, life will resume to normal for the residents and small businesses along East 10th Street who’ve been dealing with this stinky situation for over a year.”

On November 2, Senator Hoylman and Assembly Member Glick announced legislation to ban New York City Department of Sanitation trucks from parking overnight on city streets. The legislation was introduced more than 14 months after Department of Sanitation vehicles began parking nightly on East 10th Street in Manhattan, a primarily residential street, between 7:00pm and 6:00am every night and all day on Sundays.
