Young mom with stage 4 colon cancer gets encouraging news after grueling battle

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Years after insurance hurdles delayed the colonoscopy that ultimately revealed her stage 4 colon cancer, a young mother is celebrating encouraging news in her long battle against the disease.

The family received the encouraging news after completing a two-month break from chemotherapy treatment, with recent scans showing no evidence of disease return, according to Cory Candrill, who posted about his wife’s bravery on Facebook last week.
“I’m so unbelievably excited about this news,” his post read. “The Strength of this woman is beyond anything I can imagine ... Through it all, she was unwavering and steadfast. Moved throughout this horrible nightmare with such grace and beauty. I am in awe of you, Heather Candrilli.”
He said he was grateful for the support of State Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton, a Democrat who represents the North Shore of Staten Island and part of South Brooklyn.
Spanton has co-authored a bill with state Sen. Christopher J. Ryan of Central New York, requiring that insurance companies provide complete coverage for colorectal screening tests, including colonoscopies, for patients beginning at age 35.
